Job Summary:

As an Operations & Maintenance Technician IV – Mechanical you will install, maintain, and repair a wide range of water utility facilities and equipment. In this journey-level position, you will monitor and inspect mechanical equipment to ensure reliability, perform predictive and diagnostic testing, and conduct preventive and corrective maintenance. You will support operations in conveyance and distribution, treatment plants, and pumping plants by improving equipment performance and upgrading systems to meet service demands.

What You’ll Do:

Work hands-on in the field maintaining and troubleshooting mechanical systems that keep Metropolitan’s conveyance and distribution infrastructure operating safely and reliably.

  • Install, maintain, and repair a wide range of water utility facilities and mechanical equipment

  • Monitor and inspect mechanical equipment to ensure reliability, perform predictive and diagnostic testing, and conduct preventive and corrective maintenance

  • Support operations in conveyance and distribution systems, pumping plants, and related facilities by improving equipment performance and upgrading systems to meet service demandsInspect, maintain, and improve the reliability of large infrastructure and equipment such as pumps, turbines, generators, motors, compressors, valves, turnouts and hydraulic systems, pipelines, feeders and canals, pressure-control and pressure-relief structures, and reservoirs

  • Perform operational activities associated with water conveyance and distribution systems including flow changes, adjusting settings in pressure-control and pressure-relief structures, and supporting dewatering, disinfecting, and refilling operations during shutdowns and outages

  • Perform maintenance welding, fabrication, and machining; operate heavy equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, overhead hoists, and mobile cranes; perform safe rigging procedures; and adhere to proper use of Personal Protective Equipment and respiratory protection

  • Use computer programs for individual time entry, maintenance work order tracking, work planning and estimating, and general professional communications

  • You have journey-level experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing large mechanical equipment such as pumps, turbines, motors, generators, compressors, hydraulic systems, or related infrastructure

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED

  • 6 years in a mechanical maintenance position at a water agency or in a conveyance and distribution facility such as a pump plant, treatment plant, and hydroelectric facility or similar environment.

  • OR the attainment of journey level skills through a recognized mechanical trade training program

  • Journey level experience as demonstrated by practical application of general and advanced techniques and practices specific to the operation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical systems at a water agency or in a conveyance and distribution facility such as a treatment plant, pump plant, and/or power generation systems, and related apparatus.

License:

Valid California Class C Driver’s License or equivalent (required at time of application) that allows you to drive during your employment.

Employees in this position may be required to obtain and maintain the following certifications, licensing and registrations:

  • Valid Driver's License from state of residency equivalent to a California Class A and/or B with appropriate commercial license endorsements

  • Crane Certifications

  • Welding Certifiation

  • Chemical Responder Certification

  • Forklist Certification

  • Manlift Certification

  • MWD High Voltage Switching Certification

  • Water Distribution Certification
